High Praise For Cathedral's Gold Leaf Ceiling

Thursday, 21st January 2010 (88 views)

A new vaulted ceiling painted with 24-c gold leaf and heraldic colours has been blessed by a bishop - 150 feet above the ground.

The Rt Reverend Nigel Stock, the bishop of Edmundsbury and Ipswich, carried out the special service on a raised platform at St Edmundsbury Cathedral in Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk, the Telegraph reports.

He said it was a "great honour" to have been so close to the ceiling, which was built using over 3,000 components and six tonnes of Italian oak.

"It's hard to imagine that after this people will only see this incredible ceiling from 150 feet below us," the bishop added.

Work on the cathedral's ceiling was the final phase of the town's Millennium Project, which including the construction of a new tower for the building, which was completed in 2005.

Last year, gold leaf was used to complete the $11 million (£6.6 million) restoration of the 81-year-old Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield, Illinois.

The building's pastor, Reverend Peter Harman said the work had brought a "warmth and beauty" to the church.
