The pot was found two meters beneath the ground as excavators were digging up the land to build a sewage network at the120-household Surekli village of Mardin province, the Hurriyet newspaper reported on Monday.
Workers accordingly informed the local gendarmerie about the incident, who then cordoned off the site with a wire fence and deployed security agents to the discovery site.
Mardin museum archeologists have also been called to the scene to examine the gold coins. The earliest Ottoman gold coin was minted in 1477 during the 27th year of Mehmed II's reign.
Authorities did not comment on the number of coins recovered. It is not known whether other artifacts were retrieved from the excavation site.
